Update: Where your donations really go!

1st Feb 2007

It's come to light that lots of people seem to think that giving money to the DARE Society, either through buying tickets to events or chucking pennies in our buckets, is just sponsoring someone's holiday in a far-flung land!

We're careful to put the real story in all our leaflets, web pages, newspaper articles, etc. that that's just not the case! Let us tell you how it works...

Every year we apply for funding from various sources. We have to state our case as to what we do and why we should receive grants, and keep all this money in one bank account. These funds are used for all our admin costs here in Dundee, like printing posters and flyers, paying any outside speakers/trainers, buying materials we use at our fundraisers, paying for our website, and any travel costs incurred by DARE members related to any of this - if they ask for them, most don't!

The money raised through events or otherwise donated to DARE is kept in another account. As far as possible, we try to leave this account untouched until we divide it between the project groups before they leave. By 'as far as possible', we mean that if the other account runs out of money, we may use this as the investment with which to raise more!

People who volunteer with DARE pay for their own flights and other travel costs. They pay for their accommodation and food (unless our hosts are nice enough to donate it, in which case they'll donate something back!), and for any travelling they may do after the placement and independently from DARE.

Our volunteers work extremely hard to get the money together to embark on a DARE project, so hopefully now they can be supported instead of treated suspiciously! Any questions, just ask!

Run by students of the university we strive to help those less fortunate than ourselves

D.A.R.E. has gone from strength to strength and in the year 2004/2005 has managed to raise it's profile in both the university and public communities which has created more funding for the projects and lead D.A.R.E. to win society of the year 2004/2005.
